The cost of complaining

I’ve been exchanging my old books for new books using PaperbackSwap. I’m reading a book from the ‘40 modern non-fiction books everyone should read‘ list by Marc and Angel Hack Life (practical tips for productive living blog).

Secrets of the Millionaire Mind by T. Harv Eker

This book examines the mindset required to make money and achieve your goals. Early in the book one point caught my eye.

Complaining is the worst thing you can do for the health of your wealth.

And here I thought over spending was the worst thing. Silly me. The idea here is, when you complain you attract ’crap’ into your life. This idea follows the law of attraction principle which some people may disregard as woo-woo, but I think that positive things happen to positive people. And if not, positive people help make the world a better place; better to be positive than negative.

Try this out for yourself. Eker suggests going a week without any complaining, blaming or justifying (verbally or non-verbally, aka your thoughts). Try this out in all areas of your life, including the sometimes tumultuous work part.

See the positive side of everything you encounter. Then see how you feel at the end of the week.

You attract what you focus on. So why not keep it positive?

Request for positive news stories

NBC anchor says request for positive stories has hit ‘incredible nerve’

Associated Press March 6, 2009 NEW YORK – Between the drumbeat of bad economic stories, two wars and a winter that won’t quit, NBC’s Brian Williams knows he’s been anchoring a depressing “Nightly News” for a depressed audience. Still, even he was shocked at the thousands of responses he has received in less than two days after asking viewers to suggest some good news to report.

What? Brian was shocked at the responses? I’m shocked that he’s shocked. I think people have wanted positive life affirming news for some time now. I know I have. I gave up on tv news years and years ago. I simply don’t find tiny snippets of negative happenings interesting. I gave up on tv news years ago and in May 2008 I pulled the plug on tv altogether. Yep, no tv programming – no cable, no satellite and no antenna. What have I missed? Nothing. Read my Life after cable: TV alternatives blog and considering going cable/satellite-free.

The way I see it, if you don’t like the content of tv news you can do one of three things:

  1. You can send your news suggestions to Brian Williams.
  2. Stop watching the news. Why watch something you don’t like?
  3. Stop watching tv altogether. Think of all the time you’ll reclaim.

Go ahead pick number 3! Or at least try it for a week. What could you do with that time?
